I think this one is a bit difficult to explain, but I’ll give it a try…
I actually asked several Gen Z people about it.
Normally, you’re probably familiar with the polite sentence-ending particles in Thai, such as “ka” (ค่ะ used mainly by women) and “krub” (ครับ used mainly by men).
Now, “wa” (ว่ะ) is originally an impolite sentence-ending particle. It’s only appropriate when speaking with close friends. If you use it with someone older or someone you don’t know well, it can make your speech sound rude or disrespectful.
However, among Generation Z, “wa” has evolved into more of an expression of emotion.
For example, if you want to say that your favorite artist is extremely cute, handsome, or beautiful, people might say:
Cute wa!
Handsome wa!
Beautiful wa!
The interesting part is that they usually type it as “wa” using the English alphabet instead of the Thai spelling “ว่ะ.”
Why? Because writing “ว่ะ” in Thai still looks quite rude. By writing “wa” in English letters, they’re intentionally softening the tone while keeping the emotional emphasis. It expresses something like “so,” “super,” or “extremely”, without sounding offensive.
Translation:
Atom: You’re so cute wa.
Faye: Am I really that cute wa?
