@juth can I ask why some beautiful women there are described as ‘handsome’. I’m sure it means they’re beautiful, but it’s an expression we don’t really use here in the US to describe a beautiful woman.
The word “Lor” (หล่อ) in this context conveys a sense of coolness, sharp features, and overall charisma. A woman can be both “Lor” (handsome) and “Suay” (beautiful) at the same time.
In reality, a woman being described as “Lor” doesn’t necessarily mean she dresses as a Tomboy or Cross-dresses. She might just have a very cool and striking appearance, making fans want to compliment her as “Lor” rather than just “Suay.”
Ultimately, it depends on the individual’s preference—some may prefer “Suay” (beautiful), others may prefer “Lor” (handsome), or some may go for a more neutral compliment like “Na-Ta-Dee” (หน้าตาดี) which means good-looking.
For me personally, many people often ask whether I prefer being complimented as “Suay” (beautiful) or “Lor” (handsome).
Some don’t ask directly but test the waters by calling me “Lor” first to see if I like it.
As for me, I personally prefer being called “Lor” more, but I also have no problem with being called “Suay.”
Because for me, “Lor” (handsome) or “Suay” (beautiful) are both compliments.
But in the end, we never really know what each person prefers until they tell us how they like to be complimented.
