Phi @juth kaI heard Arisa and Lalin calling each other /khun/, which was translated in the subtitles as ‘Dear.’ Is this the same /khun/ typically used as a formal honorific between people who are not yet well-acquainted?
Thai people have many different pronouns and ways of addressing each other.
In a general context, couples may call each other by:
– Nicknames
– Phi / Nong (older / younger)
– Nu
– Tur (you)
– Khun (you)
– Tua-eng (you) in a casual and cute way
If the relationship is very sweet, they might use “Teerak” (My love / Darling / Sweetheart).
Some couples even create their own unique names that only the two of them understand, or use cute nicknames like “my little cat,” “my little bear,” or “my little rabbit.”
So in this case, both of them call each other “Khun.”
If translated directly, it simply means “you”.
However, that might sound a bit unusual in English, so the translator chose to use “Dear” instead to better match the tone of their relationship.
